"Iceland is an island country located a thousand kilometers west of Norway. It has an area of 103,000 km² and a population of approximately 380,000. The capital is Reykjavík. The first inhabitants were probably Irish monks who sailed to the island around 800. In the 9th century, they were followed by Norwegians. In 930, the world's first parliament (Althing) was established in Iceland, which, apart from a short period in the 19th century, has existed to this day. Iceland is therefore considered the oldest existing republic. In the 13th century, Iceland became part of Norway, later Denmark, and did not gain full independence until 1944. The island is geologically very active. This is mainly manifested in frequent volcanic eruptions and geysers. There are many rivers, glaciers and thermal springs on the island.
