"Sousse is a port city on the Mediterranean coast of Tunisia. It is located 140 km south of Tunis on the Gulf of Hammamet. It covers an area of 45 km2 and has over 270 thousand inhabitants. It is an important port, economic center and also the seat of the University. Sousse is known for its rich history. On the site of the present city, the Phoenicians founded their colony Hadrumetum in the 11th century BC. The old part of the city, the Medina, was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1988. It includes open and covered bazaars (souks). Historically significant buildings include the Ribat fortress from 821, the central mosque and the archaeological museum with the largest collection of mosaics in the world. In the catacombs over 5 km long, there are about 15,000 graves under the city. Sousse is a popular tourist destination.
